What is an MDM?

Mid Day Meal (MDM) Scheme is a flagship programme of the Central Government of India which is implemented in association with the State Government. Under the scheme pre primary, primary class (I-V) students and upper primary class (VI-VIII) students of Government and Government Aided schools are served Mid Day Meal (MDM) in the school. Cook-Cum-Helpers have been provided in every Govt. and Govt. Aided Schools to cook nutritious and delicious food for the children.

Main Objectives of the Scheme

  1. To increase enrollment retention and to tone up the learning abilities of the beneficiaries, especially of the children belonging to poor and down trodden sections of the society.
  2. To provide nutritious meal to the school going, children to achieve the goal of healthy mind in healthy body.
  3. To promote friendship and feeling of common brotherhood among the children belonging to different Caste, Color and Creed.

Who launched the Mid-Day Meal Scheme?

The 'Mid-day meal Scheme' was first introduced in 1956 by Tamil Nadu's Government. The aim was to reduce the school dropout rate as well as increase school enrollment by providing free meals.
